Weather & Traffic Network Watcher

Monitor live weather alerts and peak-hour traffic across your freight network. See which metros are affected, lane-by-lane delay estimates split into weather (days) and traffic (hours), and what to do about it.

How to use: Select your metros, hit Scan Network, and see live NWS weather alerts plus peak-hour traffic mapped to freight delay estimates. Switch to Lane view to see corridor-level impact on specific origin-destination pairs. Subscribe to alerts to get an email when a selected market changes status.

How weather and traffic impact freight

Weather is the largest source of multi-day freight delays. A winter storm in Chicago cascades across the entire Midwest terminal network. Hurricanes in the Southeast embargo whole states for a week. Traffic is the largest source of same-day delays — peak-hour congestion in LA, the Bay Area, Chicago, and NYC routinely adds 30-90 minutes to a metro pickup or delivery.

The difference between shippers who get caught and shippers who don't is information timing. Knowing about a storm 48 hours before it hits a terminal gives you time to pre-ship, reroute, or delay pickup. Knowing the receiver's metro is in PM peak before you book a same-day pickup keeps your appointment from missing the dock cutoff.

How this tool works

Weather comes from the National Weather Service API for every market you select. We filter for freight-relevant events (storms, floods, extreme temperatures, fog) and map each one to an expected delay range based on historical freight disruption patterns.

Traffic is a peak-hour heuristic model: each top freight lane has a static profile of interstate corridors and urban segments. AM (7-10 local) and PM (16-19 local) peaks on urban corridors flag heavy congestion. Known choke points like the Cajon, Grapevine, and Siskiyou passes add static delay. The model is conservative — it returns "clear" rather than guess.

The tool auto-refreshes every 10 minutes while your tab is open, so you can leave it running as a dashboard. Your market selections are saved locally so you don't have to rebuild your network each visit.

Weather & Traffic FAQ

How does weather affect freight transit times?

Severe weather can add 1-7 days to freight transit times depending on the event. Blizzards and hurricanes cause the longest delays due to road closures and carrier embargoes. Fog and high wind typically add less than a day. The impact depends on whether weather hits the origin, destination, or transit corridor.

Where does the weather data come from?

All weather alerts come from the National Weather Service (NWS) API, the official US government source for weather warnings and advisories. Data refreshes every 10 minutes while the tool is open.

Where does the traffic data come from?

Traffic estimates come from a peak-hour heuristic: known interstate corridors and urban segments for each top freight lane, combined with the local time of day at origin and destination. AM peak (7-10 local) and PM peak (16-19 local) on urban corridors flag heavy congestion. Construction zones and choke points like the Cajon, Grapevine, and Siskiyou passes add static delay. Free tier today; we can plug in HERE or Mapbox for sensor-grade real-time without changing the UI.

How does traffic affect lane transit time?

Peak-hour congestion in LA, the Bay Area, Chicago, NYC, and Atlanta typically adds 20-45 minutes per affected segment. A lane crossing two congested metros at peak (LA → SF in PM peak) can stack 1-2 hours of added transit. Construction zones add static delay regardless of hour.

How is the combined weather + traffic delay calculated?

Weather delay is in days (1-7 days for severe events, mapped from NWS alerts within the lane transit window). Traffic delay is in hours (peak-hour congestion + corridor incidents). The lane card shows both axes separately so you can see whether the disruption is a multi-day weather hold or a same-day traffic slowdown.

What should I do when a lane shows as disrupted?

For 1-2 day weather delays, book early or add buffer to your pickup schedule. For 3+ day delays (blizzards, hurricanes), consider delaying the shipment or rerouting. For peak-hour traffic, shift pickup to off-peak (mid-morning or mid-afternoon) to keep your appointment.

How many metros does this tool cover?

The watcher covers 29 major US freight metros including Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, Newark, Seattle, Denver, and more. Select your metros to build a custom network dashboard.

Does Warp adjust routing for weather and traffic?

Yes. Warp Orbit monitors weather events in real time and flags shipments on impacted lanes. Cross-dock routing gives Warp more flexibility to reroute freight around disruptions compared to fixed terminal networks.

Don't let weather or traffic surprise your freight

Warp Orbit monitors weather alerts and corridor congestion across the network in real time. Book a lane and let the AI handle rerouting and timing when conditions change.
