How weather impacts freight
Weather is the single largest source of unplanned freight delays. A winter storm in Chicago can cascade across the entire Midwest terminal network, adding 1-3 days to shipments that never touch Illinois. Hurricanes in the Southeast can embargo entire states for a week.
The difference between shippers who get caught and shippers who don't is information timing. Knowing about a storm 48 hours before it hits a terminal gives you time to pre-ship, reroute, or delay pickup. Knowing about it after your freight is sitting on a dock doesn't.

The Weather Network Watcher pulls live alerts from the National Weather Service API for every market you select. It filters for freight-relevant events (storms, floods, extreme temperatures, fog) and maps each one to an expected delay range based on historical freight disruption patterns.
The tool auto-refreshes every 10 minutes while your tab is open, so you can leave it running as a dashboard during weather season. Your market selections are saved locally so you don't have to rebuild your network each visit.

Severe weather can add 1-7 days to freight transit times depending on the event. Blizzards and hurricanes cause the longest delays due to road closures and carrier embargoes. Fog and high wind typically add less than a day. The impact depends on whether weather hits the origin, destination, or transit corridor.
Where does the weather data come from?
All weather alerts come from the National Weather Service (NWS) API, the official US government source for weather warnings and advisories. Data refreshes every 10 minutes while the tool is open.
What should I do when a lane shows as disrupted?
