How to Ship GPU Servers via LTL Freight

Warp's guide to shipping GPU servers, 8-GPU HGX and DGX class nodes and AI compute via LTL freight. Covers the crate density that sets the class, shock protection for GPU trays, declared-value insurance on a $300,000 node, and inside delivery to a data center cage.

Quick reference

Freight class range
70 to 110
Typical dimensions
8U node, 14 in tall, 19 in wide, 35 in deep, crated to 48 x 40 x 30 in
Typical weight per pallet
250 to 300 lb bare, 400 to 500 lb crated on the pallet

Freight class and density

GPU Servers on the density scale

Pounds per cubic foot

A crated 8-GPU server is class 77.5 freight on its own pallet, class 70 when two share one, and class 110 when it ships in an oversized crate. The server never changed. The crate and the pallet set the density, and the density sets the class.

Two crated nodes48 x 40 x 48 in = 53.3 cu ft, at 850 lb15.9 lb per cu ft, class 70

The crate costs you a class band and buys you the server. Warp prices by the pallet, so the band does not change the rate; it only changes what a class-based carrier would charge you for the same crate. Run your own numbers with the density calculator or the freight class calculator.

Recommended packaging

Ship each node in its original foam-cut shipping box or a custom crate, on a shock pallet with foam or spring isolators, strapped and corner-protected, with tilt and shock indicators on two faces. Rail kits, cables and bezels ship inside the crate in their own boxes. Keep the server on its own pallet or share one with a second node only; never let anything stack on top, and mark the crate "This side up, do not stack".

Accessorials you may need

These are the most common accessorial services for gpu servers shipments. Declare them at booking time — carriers that discover them on arrival bill more and back-date to the invoice. With Warp, every accessorial below is already included in the per-pallet rate.

Inside delivery
$75 – $200 carrier fee
The driver moves freight past the dock door into the building (lobby, first room, or first dry area).
When it applies: Shipment must end up inside the building, not just at the curb or dock.
Two-man delivery
$100 – $250 carrier fee
A second helper is dispatched with the driver to handle heavy, fragile, or awkward freight.
When it applies: Single pieces above ~150 lbs, fragile items, or inside delivery beyond the first room.
Liftgate at delivery
$50 – $150 carrier fee
Same hydraulic lift used at the delivery stop to lower freight from the truck bed to ground level.
When it applies: Destination has no loading dock. Charged separately from pickup liftgate.
Delivery appointment
$25 – $75 carrier fee
Carrier schedules a specific pickup or delivery window rather than a loose same-day arrival.
When it applies: Receiving hours are restricted, or the consignee requires call-ahead scheduling.
Limited access delivery
$75 – $175 carrier fee
Fee applied when the delivery location is hard for a tractor-trailer to reach or has restricted access conditions.
When it applies: Construction sites, schools, military bases, churches, farms, rural addresses, storage facilities.

Shipping tips for gpu servers

  1. Keep the original shipping box. ODM and OEM boxes are foam-cut to the chassis and are the cheapest shock protection you will ever get. Put the box in a crate or on a shock pallet rather than replacing it.
  2. Declare the value at booking. Carrier liability on electronics is cents per pound, so a $300,000 node is uninsured by default. Warp issues cargo insurance up to $1M declared value with the certificate at booking.
  3. Put tilt and shock indicators on the outside. They cost a few dollars and they turn a concealed damage dispute into a documented event at the delivery signature.
  4. Book inside delivery to the cage with a second person. A data center dock is not the cage, and a 450 lb crate is not a one-person piece.
  5. Set the delivery appointment and send the security list. Data centers receive by the window with named contacts; a driver who is not on the list goes back to the terminal with your server.

What each mistake costs

The node

No declared-value cover on a $300,000 server

Standard carrier liability pays cents per pound. On a 450 lb crate that is a few hundred dollars against a six-figure node. Declared-value cover up to $1M is one toggle at booking, and the premium shows before you confirm.

$75 to $200

Dock delivery for a cage install

Inside delivery moves the crate past the dock door and across the hall. Without it the server is delivered at the dock and getting it to the cage is your problem on the day, with no driver attached.

$100 to $250

One driver for a 450 lb crate

A second person is a booked accessorial. The alternative is a refused delivery, a redelivery fee and a server that sat at a terminal overnight.

4 classes

An oversized crate with one node in it

One node in a 48 by 40 by 48 inch crate at 450 lb is 8.4 lb per cubic foot, class 110. The same node in a 30 inch crate is 13.5 and class 77.5, and two nodes sharing a 48 inch stack are 15.9 and class 70. Size the crate to the box, not to the pallet.

What freight class a GPU server ships at

A crated 8-GPU node is class 77.5 on its own pallet, class 70 when two share one, and class 110 when it rides alone in an oversized crate. The numbers: an HGX or DGX class server is about 300 lb bare and 400 to 500 lb crated. One crate at 48 by 40 by 30 inches is 33.3 cubic feet, so 450 lb is 13.5 lb per cubic foot, which is class 77.5. Two crates stacked to 48 inches at 850 lb are 15.9 lb per cubic foot, class 70. The same single node in a 48 inch crate is 8.4 lb per cubic foot and class 110, which is why the crate should fit the box rather than the pallet. Warp prices by the pallet, so the band only matters when you are comparing against a class-based carrier.

Shock, not vibration, is what breaks GPU trays

GPU baseboards, NVLink bridges, drives and DIMMs fail from handling shock at pickup and delivery, not from the road. A forklift drop of two inches onto concrete is a bigger event than a thousand miles of interstate. Ship in the original foam-cut box inside a crate or on a shock pallet with isolators, strap and corner-protect it, and put tilt and shock indicators where the receiver signs. The indicator turns "concealed damage" into a dated, witnessed event. Warp routes through one or two cross-dock touches rather than three to five terminal transfers, which cuts the number of forklift events in half before any packaging decision.

Insuring a six-figure node

Every Warp shipment carries standard carrier liability and a $75K FMCSA surety bond at no charge, and neither is enough for a GPU server. Add cargo insurance at booking: declare the value, up to $1M per shipment, and the certificate issues instantly with the premium shown before you confirm. Keep the serial numbers, the packing photos and the indicator state on the delivery receipt so a claim, if there is ever one, is a file rather than a phone call.

Delivering into a data center

Data centers receive by appointment with a named contact and a security list, often inside a two-hour window, and the route from the dock to the cage has to be clear. Warp includes the delivery appointment and limited-access delivery in the per-pallet rate, and inside delivery with a second person books on the same screen. A crated 450 lb server from Santa Clara to Austin priced at $365 6-day, and a 1,200 lb populated rack from Santa Clara to Ashburn at $384 6-day, both all inclusive as of October 2026. For a full buildout, the same freight books by the truckload, and the inbound containers from the Taiwan ODM price on the ocean lane pages with Warp drayage from the port.

Let the agent book it

If your ops run on an agent, the Warp MCP server and the keyless freight API expose the same quote, book, track, BOL and proof-of-delivery tools the booking screen uses. An agent can quote the crate from its dimensions, book the pickup with inside delivery and a second person, watch the GPS and file the POD without a person opening a browser. The AI hardware and data center industry pages cover the full program.

GPU Servers shipping FAQ

What freight class is a GPU server?

Class 77.5 for one crated 8-GPU node on its own pallet (48 by 40 by 30 inches at 450 lb is 13.5 lb per cubic foot), class 70 when two crated nodes share a pallet (15.9 lb per cubic foot), and class 110 for one node in an oversized 48 inch crate (8.4 lb per cubic foot). Warp prices by the pallet, so no class is assigned on our network; the band matters only when comparing against a class-based carrier.

How much does it cost to ship a GPU server?

A crated 450 lb 8-GPU server from Santa Clara to Austin priced at $365 6-day as of October 2026, all inclusive with liftgate, delivery appointment and limited access at $0. Inside delivery and a second person are booked on the same screen. The rate moves with the lane, the weight and the crate, so enter yours for an exact figure.

How do I insure a GPU server in transit?

Declare the value at booking. Warp issues cargo insurance up to $1M declared value per shipment with the certificate at booking and the premium shown before you confirm, on top of standard carrier liability and a $75K FMCSA surety bond that every shipment carries at no charge.

Can I ship a GPU server in its original box?

Yes, and you should. The ODM or OEM foam-cut box is the best shock protection the server will get. Put the box in a crate or strap it to a shock pallet with isolators, add corner protection and tilt and shock indicators, and mark it do not stack.

Does Warp deliver GPU servers inside a data center?

Yes. Inside delivery with a second person books on the quote screen, and the delivery appointment and limited-access delivery are included in the per-pallet rate. Send the receiving contact and the security list at booking so the driver clears the gate on the first try.

Can I ship GPU servers from Taiwan to a US data center on Warp?

Yes. Warp publishes dated 40-foot high cube and LCL prices on every Taiwan lane, handles the drayage from the US port, and runs the inland leg to the site on its own LTL and truckload network. As of October 2026, Taipei to Houston runs from $10,876 at 48 days to $19,397 at 23 days for a 40-foot high cube.
