Fulfillment center

Definition

A fulfillment center is a warehouse organized around orders leaving rather than pallets sitting: inventory arrives on pallets, is stored by the pallet or the bin, and leaves one order at a time through pick lines, pack stations and carrier docks. It holds stock the way a warehouse does, but its unit of work is the order picked, packed and shipped, not the pallet position.

Why it matters

Where a fulfillment center sits decides what delivery promise a brand can keep: a same day promise is a distance from the building, not a slogan. What it bills decides the true monthly cost: pallet day storage with no minimum reads very differently from a monthly minimum. And who runs the freight into and out of it is the line most providers broker and mark up.

When to use it

Use it when inventory arrives as pallets and leaves as orders, whether DTC parcels, same day vans, big and bulky deliveries or wholesale pallets from the same stock. Use warehouse when stock leaves the way it arrived, and cross dock when freight should not sit at all.

How Warp thinks about it

Warp operates four fulfillment centers inside its own freight network: Los Angeles on Wholesale Street with 64 dock doors, Dallas in Grand Prairie with 52, Chicago in Bensenville with 44, and New Jersey in Linden with 38. Each delivers same day within 30 miles on Sway or Warp cargo vans, 60 supporting cross dock partners stage inventory near customer clusters, and the pallets in and out ride Warp LTL and truckload, audited 24% lower per pallet across 86 enterprise LTL migrations. Storage is pallet day with no minimum stay and no platform fee. Programs are scoped on a strategy call; there is no self serve warehousing signup.

Fulfillment center versus warehouse

Both hold inventory. A warehouse is measured in pallet positions and pallet moves and is placed near supply. A fulfillment center is measured in orders shipped and is placed near the customers, which is why the delivery promise it can keep is a radius from the building. If your stock leaves the way it arrived, you need a warehouse or a cross dock; if it leaves as orders, you need a fulfillment center.

What to ask before choosing one

Which building would hold your inventory and what promise it can keep for your top metros. The storage billing unit and the minimum in dollars. Who runs the freight into and out of the building and whether it is on the same quote as storage. How receipt is confirmed and how exceptions are reported. A sample invoice for a month like yours. The 3PL RFP template on this site carries these as the twelve bidder questions.

Run it as a Warp program

Put the inventory where the trucks already are.

Send what you store and where your orders land. Warp maps it against Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago and New Jersey, prices the freight in and out on its own network, and comes back with a placement plan built from your numbers. Free, no commitment.

Frequently asked questions about fulfillment center

What is fulfillment center?

A fulfillment center is a warehouse organized around orders leaving rather than pallets sitting: inventory arrives on pallets, is stored by the pallet or the bin, and leaves one order at a time through pick lines, pack stations and carrier docks. It holds stock the way a warehouse does, but its unit of work is the order picked, packed and shipped, not the pallet position.

Why does fulfillment center matter in freight?

Where a fulfillment center sits decides what delivery promise a brand can keep: a same day promise is a distance from the building, not a slogan. What it bills decides the true monthly cost: pallet day storage with no minimum reads very differently from a monthly minimum. And who runs the freight into and out of it is the line most providers broker and mark up.

When should you use fulfillment center?

Use it when inventory arrives as pallets and leaves as orders, whether DTC parcels, same day vans, big and bulky deliveries or wholesale pallets from the same stock. Use warehouse when stock leaves the way it arrived, and cross dock when freight should not sit at all.

How does Warp handle fulfillment center?

What is a fulfillment center?

A warehouse built around orders leaving: inventory arrives on pallets, is stored by the pallet or the bin, and leaves one order at a time through pick lines, pack stations and carrier docks. Its unit of work is the order shipped, not the pallet stored, and its location decides the delivery promise it can keep. Warp runs four, in Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago and New Jersey, each with same day delivery within 30 miles.

Is a fulfillment center the same as a warehouse?

It contains one. Every fulfillment center has pallet and case storage inside it, but the building is organized around picking, packing and carrier handoff rather than deep racking alone, and it is billed by activity rather than by square footage. If inventory leaves the way it arrived, a warehouse or a cross dock is the right node; if it leaves as orders, a fulfillment center is.

How many fulfillment centers does a brand need?

As many as the order map justifies, which is usually fewer than brands expect. One center near the densest cluster of customers keeps a same day promise inside its ring and a next day promise across its region; a second center earns its keep when a second cluster sits outside every ring. Warp maps this from order history on a strategy call, and stages inventory at one of 60 cross dock partners when a cluster does not justify a full center.
