Is a fulfillment center a warehouse?
It contains one. Every fulfillment center has pallet and case storage inside it, but the building is organized around orders leaving, not pallets sitting: pick lines, pack stations and carrier docks rather than deep racking alone. If your inventory leaves the way it arrived, you need a warehouse. If it leaves as orders, you need a fulfillment center.
When do I need a fulfillment center instead of a warehouse?
When inventory arrives as pallets and leaves as orders. DTC brands, marketplaces and wholesale programs that ship both cartons and pallets from the same stock are fulfillment center work. Bulk buffering, seasonal pre builds and long lead imports that leave in pallet quantities are warehouse work, and a cross dock is the answer when freight should not sit at all.
