Intermodal Shipping

Intermodal shipping is the movement of freight in a standardized container or trailer using two or more transportation modes, typically rail and truck, without handling the cargo itself when changing modes. The container is loaded at origin, placed on a rail car for the long-haul leg, and then drayed by truck to the final destination. Intermodal combines the cost efficiency of rail for long distances with the flexibility of trucking for first and last mile.

Why it matters

Intermodal shipping is typically 10 to 20 percent cheaper than over-the-road trucking on lanes longer than 500 miles. It also reduces carbon emissions by roughly 75 percent compared to truck-only transport on the same lane. The tradeoff is longer transit time, usually one to two extra days compared to direct trucking, and less flexibility on pickup and delivery timing. For shippers with predictable, non-urgent volume on long-haul lanes, intermodal is one of the most cost-effective freight modes available.

When to use it

Use intermodal when you are shipping full containers or trailers on lanes longer than 500 miles and transit time is not the primary constraint. It works best for predictable, recurring volume where you can plan around the longer transit window. Intermodal is not suitable for time-sensitive freight, shipments requiring frequent stops, or lanes without adequate rail service. Compare intermodal rates against FTL and LTL on every long-haul lane to identify savings opportunities.

How Warp thinks about it

Warp helps shippers evaluate intermodal against other modes through instant rate comparison on the platform. For lanes where intermodal makes sense, Warp coordinates the drayage legs at both ends, which is often the most operationally complex part of intermodal shipping. For lanes where intermodal transit time does not work, Warp offers FTL, LTL, and direct delivery alternatives so you always have the right mode for the shipment.

Intermodal

Intermodal combines rail efficiency with trucking flexibility for long-haul freight.

Cost

10-20% cheaper than OTR trucking

Rail is more fuel-efficient than trucks on long distances, and the savings pass through to shippers.

Transit

1-2 days longer than direct truck

The rail leg adds time. Intermodal works when you can plan around a slightly longer delivery window.

Best for

500+ mile lanes, predictable volume

Recurring full-container shipments on long lanes are the sweet spot for intermodal economics.
