Ocean freight calculator
This is an ocean freight calculator that prices a full container (FCL) or shared container space (LCL) from 13 Asia ports to the five main US gateways, instantly and with no login, from Warp’s own dated live captures. Pick a load type below and the estimate updates immediately; for a live quote on your exact lane, run the sailing search under the estimate.
How to use: Pick a load type (FCL or LCL), an origin port, a US gateway, and a quantity. If Warp has a captured rate for that pair, the estimate updates instantly. If it doesn’t, the calculator says so and points you to the live sailing search below.
Get the live number for your lane
The calculator above only prices the lanes Warp has captured. This flow runs Warp’s live sailing search: it prices any origin and destination the network covers, right now, and lets you lock a tier online the same day.
How to calculate ocean freight charges
Ocean freight charges are four groups added together: the ocean freight line (the carrier’s rate for the box on that sailing), origin port charges, US port and customs charges, and the truck from the port to your door. Duty sits outside all four and depends on the goods. Here is a real Warp quote with every line the rail returned, captured September 27, 2026: Shanghai to Los Angeles, one 40 foot high cube, 35,000 lb, port to door, 18 day transit.
| Charge | Where it lands | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean freight | Ocean | $8,102.32 |
| FOB handling | Origin | $57.75 |
| Origin processing | Origin | $57.75 |
| Import service fee | Destination | $68.25 |
| Chassis | Destination | $103.95 |
| Container prepull | Destination | $173.25 |
| Customs entry | Destination | $51.98 |
| Import security filing (ISF) | Destination | $11.55 |
| Traffic mitigation fee (TMF) | Destination | $116.96 |
| Truck from the port to the door | Drayage | $484.20 |
| All in, port to door | 18 days | $9,227.96 |
So the ocean line was 88 percent of the number, the US port and customs lines about $526, and the truck to the door $484. The same lane priced door to door on the same capture came to $9,302.04: the factory pickup adds about $1,015 of origin lines, and that route’s ocean line came in at $7,276.48, so the two tiers landed $74 apart. Run your own lane in the calculator above and the live search below shows the same kind of breakdown for your box.
What an ocean freight quote includes
Whether it prices port to door or door to door, an ocean freight quote covers the same stack: the ocean line itself, origin port charges at the port of loading (and factory pickup, on a door to door tier), then at the US side, the import service fee, chassis, container prepull, customs entry, import security filing (ISF) and the traffic mitigation fee (TMF), and finally the truck from the port to your door. Duty sits outside all of it: US Customs assesses it on the value of the goods, not the carrier, and it is paid separately no matter which tier you book.
Warp prices and quotes every line above except duty. The customs entry and ISF lines are that filing itself, itemized in the price and filed by Warp’s licensed forwarder partners; the TMF is a standard port-side fee every ocean carrier and terminal charges on a container. Warp itself is not an ocean freight forwarder or a customs broker. Billed to the importer after arrival instead:
- Duty and import tax on the goods
- Federal entry fees: MPF at 0.3464% of the declared value (with a minimum and a cap), plus HMF at 0.125% on ocean freight
- A customs bond, unless the importer holds an annual one: a single entry runs about $5.50 per $1,000 of declared value, $55 minimum
- Exam, storage or permit fees, only if customs holds the goods
FCL or LCL: how your shipment is priced
FCL (full container load) books the whole 40 foot high cube for one shipper at a flat rate no matter how full it runs, up to the container’s 35,000 lb basis. That is what the FCL side of the calculator above estimates. For example, a 40 foot high cube from Shanghai to Los Angeles ran $9,228 on the September 30, 2026 capture, port to door, 17 days.
LCL (less than container load) shares a container with other shippers’ freight and prices per pallet instead of per box. On the Shanghai to Los Angeles lane, Warp’s captured LCL rate for 2 pallets, 1,000 lb total, priced at $1,135 on the September 30, 2026 capture, or $567.31 per pallet. LCL wins when a shipment does not fill a container, since the container’s fixed costs get spread the same way whether it is fully booked by one shipper or shared. The road matters too: a 40 foot trailer can legally carry about 44,000 lb on the US highway network, well above the 35,000 lb this calculator prices per container, so it is the ocean container’s own payload cap, not the truck, that usually decides how much freight rides in one box.
What moves the price
On the Shanghai to Los Angeles lane captured September 30, 2026, the best value tier priced at $9,228 port to door in 17 days, while the other tier on the same sailing search ran $9,302 door to door in 20 days, a $74 difference on the same origin and destination. That spread moves with which sailing has open space, the season (the weeks before Lunar New Year and the fall peak both push rates up), fuel surcharges, whether the load starts at the port or the supplier’s dock, and the specific port pair. A different lane, or the same lane a week later, rarely holds the same number twice, which is the whole reason every price on this page carries a capture date and the live search below re-prices it in real time.
How long an ocean freight quote is valid
The September 30, 2026 capture above held its rate until October 3, 2026. Ocean rates move with sailing schedules, fuel indices and available space, so a hold date is not a formality: once it passes, the carrier can reprice the sailing and the number changes. Lock the rate before the hold date and it is fixed for your booking; miss it and the next live search returns whatever the sailings are quoting that day. There is no charge to lock a rate and no account needed to get the quote in the first place: you lock the tier online here, and a Warp team member confirms the booking the same day.
Every captured rate behind this calculator
Each row is a real production capture from Warp’s live sailing search, priced as one 40 foot high cube container (FCL) and 2 pallets, 1,000 lb total (LCL) where Warp has captured it. Rates move with sailings and fuel, so treat these as a starting point and confirm the current number with the live search above. Latest capture on this grid: September 30, 2026.

After the container lands
Warp runs the US leg itself: port pickup, cross dock and palletization, then LTL or truckload into Amazon FBA, a retail distribution center, or your own warehouses. Every move is tracked on the scan trail and inside the TMS, so you’re not chasing a forwarder for a status update once the container is on US soil.
How the calculator differs from /ocean
This page shows Warp’s captured Ocean FCL and LCL numbers instantly: pick a port, a US gateway, a load type, and a quantity, and the price updates from a dated capture with no API call. /ocean runs the same request through Warp’s live sailing search instead, so it prices any origin and destination the network covers, not just the pairs captured here, and it’s the page that gets you into a bookable tier the same day. Both are Warp’s: this one is the calculator, /ocean is the quote page.
Ocean freight calculator FAQ
How much does it cost to ship a 40ft container from China to the US?
On Warp’s live captures, a 40 foot high cube from Shanghai to Los Angeles ran $9,228 (17 to 20 days, port to door) on the September 30, 2026 capture, and Shanghai to New York ran $10,910 (31 to 35 days) on the September 30, 2026 capture, each carrying 35,000 lb. Pick the lane above for the exact number, or run the live sailing search below for today’s rate.
How do you calculate ocean freight charges?
Add four things: the ocean freight line, the origin port charges, the US port and customs charges, and the truck from the port to the door. On a real Warp quote captured September 27, 2026 for Shanghai to Los Angeles (one 40 foot high cube, 35,000 lb, port to door) that was $8,102.32 ocean freight, $115.50 origin charges, $525.94 US port and customs charges, and $484.20 port to door trucking, $9,227.96 all in for 18 days. Duty is separate and depends on the goods. Every line is itemized in the section below.
What does an ocean freight calculator include?
The estimate above covers the ocean freight itself, port pickup at the US gateway, transload or cross dock at a Warp facility, and final delivery to a US ZIP on the Warp network, all as one number, and the customs entry and ISF filing are itemized in that same price, filed by Warp’s licensed forwarder partners. Duty, import tax, the MPF and HMF entry fees, a customs bond if you don’t hold an annual one, and any exam or storage fees are billed to the importer after arrival.
What is the difference between LCL and FCL?
FCL (full container load) books the whole container for one shipper, priced as one flat number no matter how full it runs. LCL (less than container load) shares a container with other shippers’ cargo and prices per pallet instead, in Warp’s captured basis of 2 pallets, 1,000 lb. This calculator prices both: switch the toggle above to see either.
How long does ocean freight take from Asia to the US?
On the captures behind this calculator, transit ran 18 to 39 days to West Coast ports (China, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan) and 28 to 67 days to New Jersey and the New York area (China and India), port or full door by tier. The speed tier you pick moves the number more than the origin does.
What happens to my container at the US port?
Warp handles port pickup, unloads and palletizes the container at a Warp cross dock, then moves the freight by LTL or truckload into Amazon FBA, a retail distribution center, or your own warehouses, tracked on the scan trail and in the TMS the whole way.
Does Warp handle customs clearance?
When the estimate ends at a door, like the ones above, yes: the customs entry and ISF filing are itemized in the price, filed by Warp’s licensed forwarder partners. Warp itself is not a licensed customs broker or ocean forwarder. Duty, import tax, the MPF and HMF entry fees, a customs bond if you don’t hold an annual one, and any exam or storage fees are billed to the importer after arrival.
Does this ocean freight calculator work for LCL?
Yes. Switch the toggle above to shared space (LCL) and pick a port and gateway. On the Shanghai to Los Angeles lane, Warp’s captured LCL rate priced 2 pallets, 1,000 lb total, at $1,135 on the September 30, 2026 capture, or $567.31 per pallet. The calculator scales that per-pallet rate by your pallet count; it doesn’t extrapolate by weight.
Is there an ocean freight calculator without login?
Yes. Every estimate above is public with no account and no signup: pick a load type, a port, a gateway and a quantity, and the price comes from Warp’s own dated capture with no form to fill out first. The live sailing search below the estimate is also free to run without an account; you only create one if you go on to lock a rate.
How much does LCL shipping cost from China to the US?
On Warp’s Shanghai to Los Angeles capture from September 30, 2026, 2 pallets (1,000 lb total) ran $1,135, or $567.31 per pallet, port to door. Pick a different China port and US gateway above for that pair’s number, or run the live search for a pallet count over 10.
