Pallet Weight Calculator
Calculate total pallet weight from individual case weights. Enter the number of cases, weight per case, and pallet weight to get your total shipping weight instantly.
How to use: Enter the number of cases, weight per case, and pallet weight. The calculator returns total pallet weight and flags if you exceed standard carrier weight limits.
How to calculate total pallet weight
Total pallet weight is the sum of all product weight on the pallet plus the weight of the pallet itself. Start by multiplying the number of cases by the weight per case to get total case weight. Then add the pallet weight, typically 30 to 48 pounds for a standard 48x40 inch wood pallet. If you are shipping multiple pallets, each pallet's weight must be added separately.
This total is what carriers use when quoting rates and what must appear on your bill of lading. Getting it wrong, even by a few pounds per case across dozens of cases, can add up to significant discrepancies that trigger reweigh fees.

Why accurate weight matters for freight shipping
Carriers weigh shipments at terminals. If the actual weight exceeds what was declared on the BOL, the carrier will issue a reweigh fee and adjust the invoice to reflect the higher weight. For LTL shipments, weight also affects freight class. An underreported weight can push your shipment into a different density bracket and trigger reclassification charges.
Accurate weight is also a safety issue. Trucks have legal weight limits, and overloaded pallets can shift during transit, causing damage or accidents. Always weigh a sample of cases and use the actual weight rather than estimates from product packaging.
Warp prices by pallet count and lane distance
Warp eliminates weight-based pricing surprises. Instead of calculating total weight, looking up freight class, and hoping the carrier agrees with your numbers, Warp gives you a per-pallet price upfront. The rate is all-inclusive with no fuel surcharges, no accessorial fees, and no reclassification risk. Your quoted price is your final price.
Pallet weight FAQ
How do you calculate total pallet weight?
To calculate total pallet weight, multiply the number of cases by the weight per case to get the total case weight. Then add the weight of the pallet itself (typically 30-48 lbs for a standard wood pallet). If shipping multiple pallets, add the pallet weight for each one.
How much does a standard pallet weigh?
A standard 48x40 inch GMA wood pallet weighs between 30 and 48 pounds, with 45 lbs being the most common average. Lightweight pallets can weigh as little as 15 lbs, while heavy-duty or hardwood pallets can weigh 70 lbs or more. Plastic pallets typically weigh 35-55 lbs.
Why does accurate pallet weight matter for shipping?
Accurate pallet weight is critical because carriers use it to determine freight class, calculate shipping costs, and ensure trucks are loaded within legal weight limits. Underreporting weight can result in reweigh fees, reclassification charges, and carrier disputes.
How much does an empty pallet weigh?
A standard 48x40 inch GMA wood pallet weighs 35 to 45 lbs when new and 30 to 40 lbs when used. Plastic pallets weigh 15 to 25 lbs. Euro pallets (EUR 1) weigh 45 to 55 lbs. Half pallets weigh 18 to 25 lbs and quarter pallets weigh 10 to 15 lbs.
Should I include the pallet weight when shipping?
Yes. Carriers require the gross weight on the bill of lading, which includes the pallet itself. Failing to include pallet weight can trigger reweigh fees at the terminal. For a shipment with 6 pallets at 40 lbs each, that is 240 lbs of pallet weight alone. Always add pallet weight to your product weight.
What is the maximum weight for a standard pallet?
A standard 48x40 inch GMA wood pallet can support up to 2,500 lbs when new. Used pallets should be limited to 2,000 lbs due to structural degradation. Most LTL carriers cap individual pallet weight at 2,500 lbs. Exceeding this limit may require special handling or additional charges.
How do I weigh a loaded pallet accurately?
Use a floor scale or pallet jack scale rated for your expected weight range. Place the loaded pallet fully on the scale and wait for the reading to stabilize. Weigh at least 2 to 3 pallets from each batch to check for variance. If you do not have a scale, weigh individual cases on a bench scale and multiply by case count, then add empty pallet weight.
What is the difference between gross and net pallet weight?
Net weight is the weight of the product only, excluding the pallet and packaging. Gross weight is the total weight including the pallet, stretch wrap, and any dunnage. Carriers and freight quotes always use gross weight. When filling out a bill of lading, always declare gross weight to avoid reweigh fees and billing disputes.
