Truck Payload Calculator

Calculate how much cargo your vehicle can carry. Select a vehicle type, enter your cargo weight, and see remaining capacity, weight utilization, and whether you need a larger truck.

How to use: Select your vehicle type — from cargo van to 53ft trailer — and enter your cargo weight. The calculator shows remaining payload capacity and whether your load fits.

How to choose the right vehicle size

Choosing the right vehicle starts with knowing your cargo weight. Weight is the most common constraint — a 26-foot box truck maxes out at 10,000 lbs, which means ten 1,000 lb pallets fill it by weight even though the truck has room for 12 pallets by floor space. Always check weight utilization before assuming you have capacity left.

Volume matters for lightweight, bulky freight. If your cargo weighs only 3,000 lbs but takes up 1,400 cubic feet, a 26-foot box truck (1,600 cu ft) works but a 16-foot truck (800 cu ft) does not. The calculator shows both weight and volume utilization so you can identify which constraint limits your load.

Vehicle capacity planning

Efficient capacity planning means minimizing empty space without overloading. Target 70-90% weight utilization — below 70% and you are likely paying for a larger vehicle than you need; above 90% leaves little margin for weight variance or additional last-minute freight. The calculator color-codes utilization so you can see at a glance whether your load is optimized.

For recurring shipments, track your utilization over time. If you consistently run at 40% on a 26-foot truck, switching to a 16-footer saves on vehicle cost. If you regularly exceed 90%, upgrading to a larger vehicle avoids overweight penalties and split shipments.

Truck payload FAQ

What are the payload limits for common truck types?

Payload limits vary by vehicle. A cargo van holds up to 3,000 lbs, a sprinter van up to 3,500 lbs, a 16-foot box truck up to 5,000 lbs, a 26-foot box truck up to 10,000 lbs, and a 53-foot dry van trailer up to 44,000 lbs. These are maximum cargo weights after accounting for the vehicle’s own weight.

How do I choose the right vehicle size for my shipment?

Match your shipment to the smallest vehicle that fits both the weight and volume. Oversizing wastes money on unused space. Undersizing risks overloading the vehicle or requiring multiple trips. Enter your cargo weight, volume, and pallet count in the calculator to see utilization percentages for each vehicle type.

What happens if you exceed a truck’s payload capacity?

Exceeding payload capacity is illegal and dangerous. Overweight trucks face DOT fines starting at $65 per pound over the limit. Overloading also accelerates brake and tire wear, increases stopping distance, voids insurance coverage, and can cause mechanical failure or accidents. Always verify your load is within the vehicle’s rated capacity before dispatch.
