How landed cost is built, with real numbers

A $60,000 order of 2,000 units from Shenzhen (Yantian) to Los Angeles, duty rate 6.5%, one 40 ft high cube. The freight is Warp’s captured rate for that lane; every other row is set by law or by the surety, and every one is charged on the $60,000, not on the freight.

The 2026 Section 301 rate by origin

USTR’s final action in its forced labor Section 301 investigation, published July 23, 2026 and in force from July 24, 2026, sets an additional duty on goods from each origin. It stacks on the normal HTS rate; pharmaceuticals (HTS 3004, for pharmaceutical use) and smartphones (HTS 8517.13) are excluded. Read on October 25, 2026.

OriginSection 301 in 2026On a product at 6.5% HTS
China12.5% on top of the HTS rate12.5% more, 19.0% in all
Vietnam12.5% on top of the HTS rate12.5% more, 19.0% in all
India10% on top of the HTS rate10% more, 16.5% in all
Taiwantops the HTS rate up to 10%3.5% more, 10.0% in all
South Koreatops the HTS rate up to 12.5%6% more, 12.5% in all

China also keeps its older Section 301 list duties (25% on the 2018 Lists 1 and 2, continued by USTR in October 2026, plus the 2024 increases on products like EVs, batteries and semiconductors). Those depend on the product, so the calculator takes them as their own field. For India, see the US tariff on India.

Landed cost calculator FAQ

What is landed cost?

Landed cost is everything it takes to get one unit from the factory to your door: the goods, the freight, the duty, the import fees and the bond. Divide the total by the units and you have the number to price against. In the example on this page, $30.00 of goods lands at $40.14 a unit.

How do you calculate landed cost?

Add the goods value, the freight to your door, duty at your product’s HTS rate, any additional duty on the origin country, the merchandise processing fee (0.3464% of value with a minimum and a cap), the harbor maintenance fee (0.125% of value on ocean cargo) and the customs bond, then divide by the units. Duty and both fees are charged on the goods value, not on the freight.

What is the Section 301 tariff in 2026?

Since July 24, 2026, USTR’s forced labor Section 301 action adds 12.5% to goods from China and Vietnam and 10% to goods from India, and tops the rate up to 10% for Taiwan and 12.5% for South Korea, on top of the normal HTS duty. Pharmaceuticals (HTS 3004, for pharmaceutical use) and smartphones (HTS 8517.13) are excluded. China also keeps its older Section 301 list duties on many products.

Does the ocean freight price include duty?

No. The captured ocean price runs to a door near the US port and includes the customs entry and ISF filing fees, but duty, the merchandise processing fee, the harbor maintenance fee and the bond are billed to the importer after arrival. That is why this calculator adds them as their own rows.

Who pays the duty, the shipper or the buyer?

The importer of record pays US duty and fees at entry. On FOB or CIF terms that is the US buyer; on DDP the seller has priced it into the goods. Either way the landed cost per unit is the number that decides the margin.
