How to Ship Building Materials via LTL Freight

Guide to shipping construction materials on pallets via LTL freight. Covers freight class for lumber, drywall, hardware, and fixtures, plus packaging tips to prevent damage on heavy, awkward-shaped loads.

Quick reference

Freight class range
50 - 110
Typical dimensions
48" x 40" x 48" per pallet
Typical weight per pallet
800 - 2,500 lbs
NMFC reference
NMFC 37860 (building materials, NOI)

Recommended packaging

Bundle or band similar items together. Place on a standard pallet with weight evenly distributed. For loose items (hardware, fasteners), box in corrugated cartons. For sheet goods (plywood, drywall), stack flat on a pallet with edge protectors and band tightly. Shrink-wrap everything. Use plywood caps on top to prevent stacking damage.

Accessorials you may need

These are the most common accessorial services for building materials shipments. Declare them at booking time — carriers that discover them on arrival bill more and back-date to the invoice. With Warp, every accessorial below is already included in the per-pallet rate.

Liftgate at delivery
$50 – $150 carrier fee
Same hydraulic lift used at the delivery stop to lower freight from the truck bed to ground level.
When it applies: Destination has no loading dock. Charged separately from pickup liftgate.
Limited access delivery
$75 – $175 carrier fee
Fee applied when the delivery location is hard for a tractor-trailer to reach or has restricted access conditions.
When it applies: Construction sites, schools, military bases, churches, farms, rural addresses, storage facilities.
Driver assist delivery
$50 – $125 carrier fee
The driver helps unload or reposition freight beyond placing it at the dock or curb.
When it applies: No forklift, dock crew, or receiving help at the destination.
Residential delivery
$75 – $150 carrier fee
Delivery to a home or non-commercial address. Carriers classify these as higher-risk and slower-serve.
When it applies: Any address without commercial zoning, even if a business operates from it.

Shipping tips for building materials

  1. Distribute weight evenly across the pallet. Concentrated weight in one corner makes the pallet unstable on forklifts.
  2. Use plywood caps on top of sheet-good pallets. Without a cap, carriers stack other freight on top, crushing your materials.
  3. Band sheet goods tightly with poly or steel banding. Loose sheets slide and fan out during transit.
  4. For jobsite delivery (residential or limited access), always add liftgate and limited-access accessorials upfront.

Common mistakes to avoid

Mistake 1: Construction sites are classified as limited access locations. Carriers charge limited-access and liftgate fees, sometimes $150+ combined.

Mistake 2: Sheet goods (plywood, drywall) that are not banded tightly will fan out during transit and get damaged or damage adjacent freight.

Mistake 3: Heavy pallets of concrete, stone, or steel may exceed LTL per-pallet limits. Weigh before booking.

Freight class for building materials

Building materials are generally dense and ship at low freight classes. Concrete products, steel hardware, and stone are class 50-60. Lumber and sheet goods are class 65-85. Lighter items like insulation and foam board are class 92.5-110. The wide range means you should calculate density for each pallet rather than guessing. Mixed pallets of hardware and sheet goods should be classified by the dominant item.

Jobsite and residential delivery

Many building material deliveries go to construction sites, which carriers classify as limited-access locations. This means limited-access delivery fees, liftgate fees (no dock at a jobsite), and potentially driver-assist fees if the driver needs to move material past the curb. Add these accessorials at booking time. If you skip them, the carrier adds them at a higher rate after delivery.

Building Materials shipping FAQ

What freight class are building materials?

Building materials range from class 50 to 110. Heavy items like concrete, stone, and steel hardware are class 50-65. Lumber and plywood are class 65-85. Lighter materials like insulation are class 92.5-110.

Can I ship to a construction site via LTL?

Yes, but construction sites are limited-access locations. You need liftgate delivery and limited-access fees, which add $100-200 to the shipment. Request a delivery appointment so someone is on-site to receive.

How do I ship drywall and plywood on pallets?

Stack sheets flat on a standard pallet. Band tightly with poly or steel banding to prevent fanning. Apply edge protectors to all four sides. Place a plywood cap on top to protect from stacking. Shrink-wrap the entire pallet.

How heavy can a building materials pallet be?

LTL carriers typically cap at 2,500 lbs per pallet. Dense materials like concrete and stone can easily exceed this. Weigh your pallet before booking and consider partial truckload for heavier loads.
