How to Ship Tile and Flooring via LTL Freight

Guide to shipping ceramic tile, hardwood flooring, vinyl plank, and other flooring materials on pallets. Covers freight class, weight considerations, breakage prevention, and delivery to jobsites.

Quick reference

Freight class range
50 - 85
Typical dimensions
48" x 40" x 36" per pallet
Typical weight per pallet
1,500 - 2,500 lbs
NMFC reference
NMFC 37500 (tile, ceramic)

Recommended packaging

Keep tile in manufacturer cartons. Stack cartons flat on a standard pallet. Interlock layers and add a cardboard slip sheet between each layer. Band the pallet with poly or steel banding in both directions. Apply corner protectors on all four vertical edges. Shrink-wrap with five layers. Place a plywood cap on top.

Accessorials you may need

These are the most common accessorial services for tile & flooring shipments. Declare them at booking time — carriers that discover them on arrival bill more and back-date to the invoice. With Warp, every accessorial below is already included in the per-pallet rate.

Liftgate at delivery
$50 – $150 carrier fee
Same hydraulic lift used at the delivery stop to lower freight from the truck bed to ground level.
When it applies: Destination has no loading dock. Charged separately from pickup liftgate.
Limited access delivery
$75 – $175 carrier fee
Fee applied when the delivery location is hard for a tractor-trailer to reach or has restricted access conditions.
When it applies: Construction sites, schools, military bases, churches, farms, rural addresses, storage facilities.
Driver assist delivery
$50 – $125 carrier fee
The driver helps unload or reposition freight beyond placing it at the dock or curb.
When it applies: No forklift, dock crew, or receiving help at the destination.
Residential delivery
$75 – $150 carrier fee
Delivery to a home or non-commercial address. Carriers classify these as higher-risk and slower-serve.
When it applies: Any address without commercial zoning, even if a business operates from it.

Shipping tips for tile & flooring

  1. Tile pallets are extremely heavy. Calculate weight before stacking. Two pallets of ceramic tile can approach 5,000 lbs total.
  2. Band in both directions (lengthwise and widthwise). Single-direction banding allows the pallet to spread under its own weight.
  3. Use cardboard slip sheets between layers of tile cartons. This distributes weight evenly and prevents point loading on carton corners.
  4. For jobsite delivery, confirm the surface can support a liftgate truck. Soft ground, gravel driveways, and steep grades cause delivery failures.

Common mistakes to avoid

Mistake 1: Tile is extremely dense and heavy. A single pallet can weigh 2,200+ lbs. Confirm the carrier per-pallet weight limit before booking.

Mistake 2: Broken tiles inside sealed cartons are invisible at delivery. Request the driver open one carton from each pallet to inspect at delivery. Note any damage on the BOL before signing.

Mistake 3: Jobsite delivery on unpaved surfaces can fail. The delivery truck needs a flat, firm surface for the liftgate. Confirm site conditions with the contractor.

Freight class for tile and flooring

Tile and flooring materials are dense and ship at low freight classes. Ceramic and porcelain tile is class 50-60. Hardwood flooring is class 65-70. Vinyl plank and LVP are class 70-85. The high weight-to-volume ratio means tile shippers pay some of the lowest per-hundredweight LTL rates. The tradeoff is that pallets are heavy, which can trigger per-pallet weight limits.

Preventing breakage

Ceramic and porcelain tile is brittle. Breakage happens from impact (forklifts hitting the pallet), compression (too many layers stacked), and vibration (loose cartons rattling during transit). The fix: keep cartons in manufacturer packaging, interlock layers, band in both directions, and cap with plywood. At delivery, inspect before signing. Open at least one carton from each pallet to check for hidden breakage.

Tile & Flooring shipping FAQ

What freight class is ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain tile typically ships at class 50-60 due to its high density. Hardwood flooring is class 65-70. Vinyl plank and LVP are class 70-85.

How much does a pallet of tile weigh?

A standard pallet of ceramic tile weighs 1,800-2,500 lbs depending on tile size and thickness. This often approaches LTL per-pallet weight limits. Weigh your pallet before booking.

How do I file a claim for broken tile?

Note all visible and concealed damage on the delivery receipt before signing. Open at least one carton per pallet to inspect. File a claim with the carrier within 9 months of delivery with photos, the noted BOL, and the purchase invoice.

Can I ship tile to a construction site?

Yes. Add liftgate delivery, limited-access delivery, and driver-assist fees. Confirm the jobsite has a flat, firm surface for the delivery truck. Schedule a delivery appointment so someone is on-site to receive.
